How do you return a 140 mile-per-hour tennis serve?
I mean – how is that even possible? Most of us, I think, would barely be able to lift our tennis rackets before the ball whizzed by us.
Some tennis players, those with a great deal of experience, can return such serves. These players have faced so many serves that they can sense where the ball will go even before the ball is hit. The process is so quick, of course, that it takes place on a non-conscious level.
This is an extreme example of the rewards of refining your game!
I once had the experience of explaining the same set of math problems, again and again, to many different students.
Sometimes, a student would come up with a faster, better, way of doing a problem. Sometimes, my own search for a better explanation produced a faster, better result. Then, after a period of time, when someone gave me a new set of problems to solve, it took me only HALF the time that it normally would.
When we thoughtfully work on the SAME problem again and again, our brains find faster, better pathways to our desired result.
For me and my colleagues at Much Smarter, this is an exhilarating part of being in business – looking at every aspect of how we work with students and parents and continuing to refine each one with a goal of continually enhancing the experience of those we serve.
